Tickets are booked and plans for a fun evening are all in place. The only question remaining is what to wear. When you are in your 40s, you want to look cool but in a classy grown-up way. In this article we take a look at exactly what to wear to a concert in your 40s.
Hopefully you already have these clothes in your wardrobe.
Outfit 1; Elevate the classics
The first and easiest answer is that you don’t have to complicate things; wear your coolest jeans with a band T-shirt. If you need a jacket, I recommend a simple slouchy blazer. Any blazer would actually work since its grown-up qualities are a cool contrast to the casualness of the T-shirt.
What makes this look work is the interesting detail of the belt and her cool bag. The red lips help as well.
Outfit 2; Wear your lady jacket in a cool way
You have now reached the age where you can pull off a tweed jacket. But since we are going to a concert, you want to look stylish and hip. (Not mimosa brunch ready.) A longer denim skirt is the answer. The unique black T-shirt is the perfect match for the seriousness of the jacket.
I especially like the beige color of her tweed jacket, and I would match it with a pair of beige sneakers.
The gold bag and big gold chain make this outfit a true winner, so make sure you imitate those.
Outfit 3; Leather jacket and a fun skirt
No concert is complete without a leather jacket; this holds true even if you are in your 40s. Pull out your favorite leather jacket and your most loved band T-shirt. But instead of wearing jeans, wear a fun printed midi skirt.
Add white sneakers and a quilted bag and cool earing.
Outfit 4; Denim jacket and a black skirt
A great denim jacket is another good starting point for an adult version of a concert outfit. Make your denim jacket grow up by adding a black skirt. Showcase your love of music with a band T-shirt.
In many of these examples I’ve been using a band T-shirt since you want to look like you are going to a concert. But all these outfit works with any T-shirt. A simple white T-shirt would look equally good.
It’s all in the styling
I also try to work with items you probably already own, and style them in a cool way that makes them perfect to wear to a concert.
Outfit 5; Chose the right color story
If one person symbolizes exactly what to wear to a concert in your 40s, that person is designer Anine Bing. She has her own brand with lots of great clothes that fit the brief perfectly.
Her street style is a great source of inspiration when you are trying to find out what to wear next time you go out.
Here, she is showing the power of grey combined with a camel coat. The camel coat says you are a lady, and the grey jeans say you still got it, music-wise. The red boots are the exclamation point.
Red sneakers would work equally well if you want to be comfortable.
Outfit 6; Keep it elegant and add a bit of edginess
Leather is always a good idea, this lady shows us how leather can look more elegant and grown-up. Let the skirt be the statement, and combine it with a white top and a classic denim jacket.
Her gold hopes and cute brown bag stand out because of the simplicity of the outfit. If you want examples of more minimal outfits, read my article How to create perfect minimalist summer outfits – 14 stylish ideas.
Outfit 7: A leather blazer is the answer to your style dilemma
For 2024 a brown leather blazer is especially on trend. In this picture, the grey jeans make yet another appearance and it is no coincidence. Grey jeans are one of the simple answers to the question of what to wear to a concert in your 40s. Grey jeans are just more rock concert than normal jeans.
You can add a white shirt and cool boots to look like the stylish adult you are.
Outfit 8; A mature bomber jacket and a printed blouse
I love a good printed blouse for any kind of dressing up. This time Anine Bing combines her ed boots and grey jeans with a printed blouse.
The addition of the bomber jacket will tell the crowd that you still keep up with the trends.
Outfit 9; Bring on the elegance
Don’t compete with the kids by dressing in destroyed denim, celebrate the fact that you are over 40. Keep your skirt long and elegant and add a tonal sweater.
This look is all about the colors. A brown leather skirt will tick all the boxes. But it does not have to be leather, one of the best answers to your quest is to wear a monochromatic outfit. The caramel hues are what makes this lady stand out.
Outfit 10; Wear your coolest jacket
You probably have at least one jacket that you seldom wear, this is your opportunity. A rock concert is the perfect place for a cool jacket. Also try those cool shoes you never use, maybe you’ve got yourself a winning outfit?
Wear it with a white T-shirt and a white skirt. This outfit is all about showcasing the jacket.
Outfit 11; An unusual color combination
I would have never thought that brown and red works, but it totally does. Wearing a red skirt is a great answer as to what to wear to a rock concert in your 40s. But if you don’t have a red skirt, take inspiration from this picture and combine two colors that usually are not being put together. For example beige and blue, or blue and brown.
Outfit 12; Standout by dressing elegant and simple
Sure, this woman’s outfit is on the more casual side. But this look is all about embracing minimalism. Camel and white is the ticket. In a rock concert, people will dress loudly, so you can make an impact by going against the flock and looking chic instead of desperate for attention.
Outfit 13; Make a statement in an overall
You are never too old to wear a denim jumpsuit. This is a classic “cool girl” look. Chunky gold jewelry and a fanny pack make it even cooler.
The jumpsuit doesn’t have to be denim; a printed jumpsuit would be fun. Any jumpsuit will give you that nonchalance you are looking for when you are wondering what to wear to a concert in your 40s.

Outfit 14; Dress your age
Was the denim overall too much for you? This idea takes things in a different direction, wear a pencil skirt and a blouse. For shoes, I would pick a pair of clean sneakers or ballerinas to give your outfit more of a rock concert vibe.
You dont need to look like one of the kids just because you are going to a concert, stay true to your style and age and people will be impressed by your chicness.

A final note on what to wear to a concert in your 40s
The trick to look good and feel comfortable when you are going somewhere special is to wear updated, more elegant versions of what you normally wear.
If you like jeans, you should wear your coolest, most expensive jeans. If you, on the other hand, usually wear dresses, you just need a dress that’s slightly more elevated than your day-to-day dresses.
You should also stick to the colors you prefer.
Having said that, a concert is an excellent opportunity to wear those clothes you don’t get a chance to wear in your normal life, so bring something extra when it comes to accessories and shoes.
